Disposal emergencies and what to do
A leaking disposal puts water in the cabinet, and a jammed one may hold standing water in the sink. Switch the disposal off at the wall switch and unplug it if the cord is reachable. Never reach into the grinding chamber, even when it is off.
If water is pooling under the sink, close the shutoff valves and call. We book emergency disposal calls 24/7, with same-day visits when available. A disposal and a clogged line often fail together, so the plumber checks both.
- Switch off the disposal and unplug it.
- Keep hands out of the drain opening.
- Close the shutoff valves under the sink if water is leaking.
- Do not run the dishwasher, which drains through the disposal on many sinks.
- Mop up water and note where it came from.
Why a garbage disposal fails
Humming but not turning
The blades are jammed by a hard object. A hex key turned in the bottom socket often frees it. Reset the red button afterward.
Leaking at the sides or bottom
A leak from the body means a failed seal, and the unit needs replacement. A leak at the sink flange or drain connection can be fixed.
Slow drain with the disposal
Grease and food waste have built up in the drain line. See drain cleaning.
Bad smell
Food residue on the grinding chamber walls. Cleaning helps. A persistent smell can mean a partly blocked trap.
Repair or replace a disposal
| Problem | Fix | Replace if |
|---|---|---|
| Jam | Free the blades and reset | It jams repeatedly |
| Leak at the flange or drain pipe | Reseat the seal and tighten | The body is corroded |
| Dead unit | Check the reset button and power | The motor has failed |
| Cracked housing | None | Always replace |
Installing a new disposal
A new disposal install covers mounting the unit under the sink flange, connecting the drain and dishwasher line, wiring or plugging it in and testing. Some installs need an outlet or a switch added. A plumber sizes the motor to the household, and a larger motor handles more food waste with less jamming.
If you want to install one yourself, read the manufacturer's instructions and turn off the power. Many people choose a plumber for the drain connections, which leak if they are not seated well.
What not to put down the disposal
Grease, coffee grounds in large amounts, fibrous vegetables such as celery and corn husks, pasta and rice that swell, and bones all cause problems. Grease especially coats the drain and builds up over time. Run cold water while the disposal runs, and for a few seconds after, to carry waste past the trap.
Local conditionsDisposals and Sanger's drains
Sanger's water is hard, averaging 145.5 ppm in the city's 2024 report, so mineral scale and soap residue are common in kitchen drains. Combined with grease, that makes a sticky coat in the pipe. Older kitchen drain lines in homes more than 30 years old, which the housing element says is 53 percent of Sanger homes, can be rough inside and snag food waste.
If a new disposal drains slowly, the line downstream is likely the problem, not the unit. We can clear it the same visit. See hydro jetting for heavy grease.
What affects the price of disposal repair
Repairs and installs vary by unit and drain. We give a clear price before work starts.
Insurance covers water damage from a sudden failure at times, but not the disposal. Want your real number? Call (855) 575-2890.

Rules behind disposal installs
The UPC-based California Plumbing Code requires a trap and an air gap or high loop on the dishwasher drain that connects to a disposal. A plumber sets these up so the dishwasher cannot drain backward into the sink.
