Sewer line failure: when it is an emergency
A sewer line fails slowly or all at once. Slow failure shows as backups that return, a gurgle in the toilet and a wet patch or sinkhole over the line. A sudden collapse shows as no drain working at all. Sewage in the house, or sewage surfacing in the yard, is an emergency.
We book emergency sewer line repair assessments 24/7. Same-day visits are available when schedules allow. The first step is almost always a camera, because it tells us whether the pipe needs a patch, a liner or full replacement.
How a sewer line problem is found
A plumber feeds a waterproof camera through the cleanout and records the pipe. The footage shows cracks, offset joints, roots, a belly that holds water, and the exact distance to each defect. A locator at the surface marks where the problem sits, so a repair can be planned without guessing.
You receive an explanation of what the camera found. Our sewer inspection page covers what the footage shows and when to ask for a copy.
OptionsRepair options and honest trade-offs
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair (dig) | One short failed section | Digs up one area, such as a yard or driveway |
| Pipe lining (trenchless) | Cracks, root entry and worn walls in a pipe that still holds its shape | Cannot fix a collapsed or badly sagging pipe, and the liner reduces diameter slightly |
| Pipe bursting | Replacing a whole line with little digging | Needs entry and exit pits and sound surroundings |
| Full replacement (open trench) | Collapsed or severely offset pipe | Most disruptive, most lasting |
Pipe lining, explained
Pipe lining inserts a resin-soaked tube into the old pipe, then cures it to form a new pipe inside the old one. It seals cracks and joints where roots enter and it avoids trenching through landscaping, concrete or a driveway. The pipe has to be round enough to take the liner, which is another reason the camera comes first.
Lining is not always cheaper than digging, and it is not for every pipe. A section with a belly or a break needs excavation. We lay out both options so you can compare.
Rules that applyBefore any digging: 811 and permits
According to USA North 811, anyone excavating in Fresno County should contact them at least two working days before digging begins. Utility locators mark gas, electric and water lines so a shovel does not hit them. A repair in the public right of way involves the city, and Sanger's Building Division can say whether your project needs a permit.
Ask about permits before you agree to work. Permit rules vary, so the Building Division is the source for answers, not a contractor's guess.
Sanger homesLocal causes of sewer line trouble
The city's housing element reports 53 percent of homes built more than 30 years ago and about 29 percent built more than 50 years ago. Laterals from that era may be clay, cast iron or an early plastic. In the original downtown core, which the housing element describes as older housing, a lateral may have served the house for many decades.
Trees matter too. Roots look for water and find it at pipe joints. In any older neighborhood, mature trees are often the reason a lateral that has backed up twice needs more than cleaning.
What affects the price of sewer line repair
Sewer repairs vary a lot, and a clear price depends on what the camera shows. We provide a clear price before work starts, after the diagnosis.
Homeowner policies often exclude sewer line wear and tear, but some cover damage that follows a sudden failure. Ask your insurer before work begins. For your real number, call (855) 575-2890.
Sewer line failing?
A 24/7 dispatcher can book a camera diagnosis and a licensed plumber, same-day when available.
Sewer line repair questions
Yes. The dispatch line answers 24/7. Overnight calls for sewage backups or a collapsed line are booked for same-day service when available.
No. The pipe must keep its shape and have no major sag or break. A camera inspection shows if lining will work.
Spot repairs and lining can finish in a day. Long runs and full replacements take longer. The plumber gives a timeline after the camera.
That depends on where the problem is. Sanger Public Works can tell you where the city's responsibility ends and yours begins.
It can restore flow for a time. A cracked or collapsed pipe keeps failing until it is repaired.
