How hard is Sanger's water?

The City of Sanger's 2024 water quality report lists hardness as an average of 145.5 ppm across its tests, with results from not detected up to 330 ppm. Hardness is measured as calcium and magnesium, and it varies by well. On the USGS scale, 121 to 180 ppm is hard and above 180 is very hard.

By the standard conversion of 17.1 ppm per grain, 145.5 ppm is roughly 8.5 grains per gallon. That figure is our calculation, not a number in the city's report, so test your own tap. Ask Sanger for its latest report, and use a home test kit for a quick check at your faucet.

Sanger's 2024 average of 145.5 ppm sits in the hard class, and individual results ran higher.

Effects

What hard water does at home

Scale on fixtures and glass

White crust on faucets, shower heads and glass. Aerators and cartridges clog.

Water heater wear

Scale builds on the tank bottom and on elements, shortening heater life. See water heater repair.

Dry skin and spotty dishes

Soap does not lather as well and leaves film. Many people notice it on hair and skin.

Slow drains

Soap curd and scale coat drain walls, which slows them over time.

Softener, conditioner or filter

A salt-based softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium in an ion exchange tank and regenerates with brine. A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals form scale without removing them. A filter, such as carbon or reverse osmosis, removes taste, chlorine or specific contaminants but does not soften water.

Some California communities limit salt-based softeners because of brine discharge, so ask Sanger Public Works whether any rule applies before you buy. Choosing the right system starts with a water test and a conversation about what bothers you.

Many homes pair a softener with a drinking-water filter.

Treatment and testing

What is in Sanger's water besides hardness

The city relies on eight wells and operates four granular activated carbon plants to remove DBCP. It chlorinates water from these and other wells. The 2024 report lists treated nitrate between not detected and 7.7 ppm against a limit of 10, and chlorine between 0.92 and 1.4 ppm. The city states that the water meets state and federal requirements.

A home filter is a matter of taste and preference, and it does not replace the city's treatment. If you have a health question about drinking water, ask your doctor and the city's water division.

Installing and servicing a system

A softener installs on the main water line, usually near the water heater or in the garage, with a drain line for regeneration and an electrical outlet. The plumber adds a bypass valve so you can isolate the unit. A filter installs on a single line or at one tap.

Service includes setting the hardness level, checking the brine tank and replacing parts that wear, such as the resin or the control valve. We service systems that were installed by others.

What affects the price of a softener or filter

Prices depend on the system and the site. We give a clear price before work starts.

Insurance does not cover softeners. Some lenders and landlords require documentation of a system. Want your real number? Call (855) 575-2890.

FAQ

Water softener questions

The city reports that its water meets state and federal requirements. Hardness is not a health issue but a scale and appliance issue.

That depends on your tolerance for scale and your appliances. At around 145 ppm average, many homes see scale. Test your tap.

They help reduce scale in the heat exchanger. See tankless service.

Yes. Describe the symptom and the model if you know it.

Yes. Water differs by town, so test your own tap. See Reedley and Selma.
